Biophenolics was born from a revolutionary discovery: the ability of polyphenols to act as ionophores, facilitating the cellular absorption of essential minerals such as zinc. Led by Dr. Husam Dabbagh, this finding demonstrated for the first time the potential of polyphenols to improve health in an innovative and effective way. The scientific research was published in 2014 in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry and showed how quercetin and EGCG, combined with zinc, act as ionophores in a liposomal model.
Celular model
To demonstrate the proof of concept of the ionophore effect of polyphenols, both a cellular model and a liposomal model were used. In mouse hepatocytes (Hepa 1-6), it was verified that quercetin and EGCG significantly increased intracellular zinc levels, mimicking the effect of clioquinol, a well-known synthetic zinc ionophore used as a positive control.
Liposomal model
In a liposomal model, artificial structures simulating the cell membrane were created, containing inside a fluorochrome specific for zinc. Fluorescence was observed only in the samples that contained zinc and polyphenols, in the same way as in the samples containing zinc and clioquinol. Confocal microscopy confirmed that the fluorescence originated from inside the liposomes, validating for the first time this innovative mechanism of action.
